Frequently asked questions
GICS industries vs sectors, and how OpenStocks rolls up smart-money flows
What's the difference between a sector and an industry?
Sectors are the broadest GICS bucket (11 in total — e.g. Information Technology). Industries are one level finer (e.g. Semiconductors, Software, IT Services), so each sector contains 5–15 industries. Industry pages let you drill into the smart-money read on a specific theme.
How are industry-level flows computed?
Same methodology as sectors: every 13F position from every tracked super-investor, grouped by GICS industry, and rolled up to net dollar value plus quarter-over-quarter delta. The math is transparent — every contributing trade is auditable from the underlying ticker page.
Why does an industry on OpenStocks have so few stocks?
We only show industries with at least one institutional position in our database. Smaller, less-followed industries occasionally have only a handful of trackable names — the data is still real, just narrow.
